I've not yet watched this version, having no one willing to watch it with me. I've seen the 99 remake. Watched it many times on VHS as a guilt pleasure. Watched the miniseries which wrecked me, and then finally read the book.

Oh the miniseries did me in completely, the episode where we find out what happened to Nell is one of the best hours of television ever made.

An incredible book and one of my favorite movies. I once took a friend to a showing and waited for Mrs Markway to pop out of the attic. Her reaction did not disappoint.

Oh that moment absolutely threw me for a loop, to the point where I missed it was Mrs Markway!

Same here. Eleanor says that she saw her, but I didn't believe it was really Mrs Markway until the very end.

I was so thrilled to see this in my inbox!!! lovely & well written review as always! I also love how you talked about different interpretations of the original book, I haven’t yet seen the other movie adaptions but the difference between the haunting & the haunting of hill house tv show is so interesting to contrast!! also the haunting movie I think has much more lesbian subtext which I personally adore and think is true to the book but I digress. thank you for this!!

Thank you for recommending it, I love this story and was very taken with this particular adaptation. Don't worry, I will come back to the character of Theo at some point because I'd love to delve into the various interpretation of her character and how important her queer identity is.
