I feel like in some ways the exploding head bit has hindered Scanners' reception — so iconic that it overshadows the actual film, people watch it expecting wall-to-wall carnage and are disappointed when it's actually an icy conspiracy thriller with periodic bursts of bizarre violence. (I maintain that it's actually proto-Cyberpunk.)
Anyways I love it, I think probably Cronenberg's second-best film after Videodrome.
Need to put Videodrome on the list I am very keen to see it.
And I think you're right, the exploding head is so instantly iconic that you'd think that was the general gist of the film. Maybe for the best that it didn't remain as the opening scene.
I saw the film on cable shortly after it came out. It's definitely one of a kind. I loved the special effects & Michael Ironside absolutely RULES!
Michael Ironside is so so good omg
I will watch any movie with Michael Ironsides, and this is the movie that started it. This movie blew my mind, pun intended, when it came out.
When necessary, he can put the BAD in BADASS!
